Clauddell Wright Construction Co, Inc is a local family owned business which has been operating in the Amarillo area since 1958. Clauddell grew up around the construction business and worked in the building of the original barrack buildings of the Amarillo Air Force Base back in 1950. Clauddell was a member of the Amarillo High School wrestling team and was invited to participate in the 1952 Olympic try-outs held in Salina, Kansas. In those days the try-outs were open to at large entries and Clauddell 's first match was against the reigning NCAA Champion. His name was George Layman who wrested at Oklahoma State in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Clauddell only lasted about 25 seconds but the NCAA Champion took a liking to Clauddell and wanted to introduce him to his coach at Oklahoma State University. The OSU coach was a renowned wrestling coach by the name of Art Griffith. He was in his late 60 's and was known as the Great White Father because of his team meetings and lectures on successful living in philosophy. Coach Griffith offered Clauddell a walk on scholarship of paid out of state tuition and free books from the athletic library. After 4 months of Coach Griffith 's intensive teaching and training Clauddell was the number one ranked freshman in his weight class. Coach Griffith then put Clauddell on a full ride scholarship which led to the means of getting his bachelors degree in Engineering and a 2nd Lt Commission in the Army Corp of Engineers. After serving his time at the Engineering Base at Fort Belvoir, Virginia Cauddell and Shirley returned to Amarillo and started a sand business along with dirt working, paving, and demolition. In 1974, Clauddell was offered a steel building company franchise and began building all types of metal buildings. While at a Metal Building Convention in Houston, Texas Clauddell learned that he could buy certified pre-fab buildings about ten percent cheaper on the open market than what he was paying to the parent franchise company. Clauddell gave the franchise back and began passing the savings on to his customers and still today shops the open market for the best deal. Best deals consist of quality and price for pre-fab buildings for his customers. Clauddell serves as President of the company and Shirley is Secretary-Treasurer and does all the book work and financial accounting.
